I'll reiterate the purpose of these bike helmet reviews as I have done on past posts. My goal in this post is to provide information unavailable in other reviews, particularly around fit as so much of a cyclist's experience is impacted by the fit. Perceptions of overall comfort and helmet sizing will naturally vary. However, ventilation and wind noise will also vary based on the air gap between a cyclist's head and the helmet. If a cyclist fits in on the smaller side of the range in a helmet's circumference range, there is more room for air flow around the head, for example.

The safety and protection of a cyclist is also impacted, no pun intended. The industry emphasizes oblique impacts and angular accelerations during those impacts. And while it's difficult to quantify, it's straightforward to imagine how a looser fitting helmet allows the helmet to pivot on your head easier than a tightly coupled one. In fact MIPS depends on a tight fitting helmet to produce its results as the impact tests are done on a rubberized head form.

Aerodynamics is the final area impacted by fit. If a cyclist is in-between sizes and has to upsize, than the larger frontal surface area creates more drag. Since drag is defined as the drag coefficient multiple by the frontal surface area, the additional effect is predictable and linear. In any circumstance other than a custom fit helmet, there is some additional drag associated with using an off the shelf, injection molded helmet.

What do other reviewers say about this helmet?

The following are evaluations from different publications that have ridden the Kask Protone Icon bike helmet. To prevent bias, I review, synthesize, and add the best three Google results for the "Kask Protone Icon review," not including any evaluations in which the helmet wasn't ridden and instead served simply as a regurgitation of the product press release from the manufacturer. I don't discriminate between the mainstream and the cycling media since anyone can give a good review.

Road.cc gave the Kask Protone Icon helmet 4.5 out of 5 stars and commented: “An evolution of the Protone helmet, the Kask Protone Icon is reckoned to have improved on its predecessor 'in every way possible'. Having not tested a Protone it's difficult for me to comment on this statement, but what I can say is that the Icon is the airiest and most comfortable helmet I've ever used, in 35 years of cycling. At 223g it's also possibly the lightest – I barely noticed it.” They said it is a great road helmet, light, airy, and comfortable. The amount of cooling airflow through the vents contributes to the exceptional comfort of the helmet. The rider hasn't had any issues while cycling; the helmet is compatible with a cap, no problem with glasses misting, and the wind noise is barely audible. It is built with vertical adjustability so the helmet may sit comfortably with ponytails and longer hair. The cradle also has an ergonomic neck support that fits snugly against the nape. They also mentioned the faux leather chin strap is comfy. The Coolmax pads also are washable. The downsides they cited are its high cost and the Octofit+ adjuster feels less sturdy- it broke on the first one for testing.

Rouleur Magazine tested Kask Protone Icon and commented: “The Italian brand’s redesign of its flagship lid sees a sleeker look, more ventilation, and better safety features.” They claimed it was an improved, stylish, aerodynamic cycling helmet than the previous model. They mentioned that the Octofit+ retention system is a plus to longer hair and ponytail which can be attached via the frame and adjusted accordingly. They stated that given the Protone Icon's three size options and easily adjustable retention system, most cyclists should be able to find the perfect fit. About the weight, the Protone Icon weighs the same as its predecessor and feels light while cycling. It is also quite comfortable. However, they were concerned about the Kask Protone Icon's internal lining, made of CoolMax® fabric, which Kask claims is comfortable and quick-drying. They pointed out that the pads are thicker than those in other helmets they own, not suitable for the hottest days but not an issue in colder climates.

The Sweet Cyclists rated the Kask Protone Icon 9 out of 10 and commented: "The KASK Protone Icon combines the iconic Protone helmet with an aerodynamic profile and comfortable OctoFit+ retention system.” The Kask Protone Icon is a well-built and premium road cycling helmet, according to their claims. The improved aerodynamics of the new Protone Icon make it superior to the previous helmet. They stated that the bike helmet is comfortable and gives you a sense of speed. The helmet stayed cool even on hot days thanks to the huge air vents' efficiency in channeling air through the helmet. Other benefits they mentioned include the new OctoFit+ fit system features an adjustable, secure cradle that is ponytail-friendly, and plush CoolMax liners inside the helmet - easily removable and washable. The cons they didn’t particularly enjoy was that there are no graphic color schemes – The Protone Icon is only available in a choice of solid glossy and matte finishes. The only issue they experienced was when you first put the helmet on, the rear cradles can shift with a little pressure.

Overall, the press gave positive comments about the Kask Protone Icon. The top three reviews all approved how comfortable, lightweight, and aerodynamic it is. The downside comes from its high price, although it is a helmet with a premium feel and is worth it.

Is the POC Ventral MIPS the best bike helmet for you?

As I always say, the best bike helmet is the one that fits you. The Best Bike Helmet Finder is a good place to start. Helmets are a very personal decision both for reasons of sizing and fit but also style and performance preferences. You aren't going to ride with it if it's uncomfortable.
